A healing miracle

I cannot heal a broken heart, but I know who can.
I cannot guide you through the dark but I know who can.
I cannot hold you constantly but I know who can.
I cannot meet your every need but I know who can.
God cares throughout your test and trials
and when your heart is breaking he’ll hear when you call.
He’s here through every situation your trials and temptations.
He’ll hold you close for I know He’s real – His word is true
I know that God can

God is not religion! He’s not religious rules and regulations! He’s not church! He’s not the Bible! These can be a means to that healing miracle that God wants to perform for you – but they are not in themselves able to transform hearts and minds. They cannot of themselves heal your damaged heart. They cannot unravel the knots in your brain or the blaming yourself that the years of powerful abuse have brought about. They cannot cure your phobia – your paralyzing fear of conflict.

They cannot give you the courage to stand up for yourself in the face of abuse. They can’t answer your prayers. They can’t work a miracle in your life circumstances. In fact, religious rules and regulations are the last thing you need right now. You’ve probably already spent a lifetime trying to be good enough.

If you simply pick up a Bible and read it you are likely to be much more affected by those passages that speak about sin and judgement than those that speak about God’s infinite love for you. A Bible, in itself, is just paper and ink. By itself, it is unlikely to do you any good at all; more likely, in fact,  to simply add to the life-long burden of guilt that has already been laid upon you.

Church may not even be a helpful place for you to be. It may be a place where the dynamics of a verbally abusive relationship  are simply not understood. Therefore, with the best of intentions, you may be given inappropriate advice. It may even be a place where, for one reason or another, you are even more emotionally-damaged. (For more on this see the link at the bottom of this web page )

Nothing less will do

Before you follow that link, however, you need to know that an authentic encounter with God is, in itself, a  healing, life-transforming miracle! Nothing less will do! Nothing else will transform your life, your mind, your heart, your relationships. Nothing else in life will give you the sense of self-worth that this miracle will give you. And nothing less that that can ever transform the distorted perceptions and abusive behaviour of your partner or family member.

You Raise Me Up

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.”

The words of this inspirational song perfectly capture the nature of that authentic encounter with God. A relationship, not religion. Emotional intimacy, not rules and regulations.  It’s an eternal love affair more precious and more satisfying than any human love affair.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.”

It’s not about what you can do for God – it’s all about what He can do for you through Jesus. The ultimate aim is to inflame your heart with an all-consuming, eternal  love for Him. God Himself must open up your heart to His love. All you need is hunger – and even that you can pray for.

There is no life – no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.”

As I am filled with wonder and dwell upon who Jesus is and what He is like, He transfers what is in Him into me.  “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”(2 Cor 3:18)

You can’t decide to have an authentic encounter with God – you can only pray for it. In fact, ‘making a decision‘ can leave you thinking that you’ve had that authentic experience when in fact you never have. ‘Making a decision‘ can leave you continuing to struggle through life in your own strength – rather than living in the power of God.

Don’t even try to ‘make a decision‘ – don’t try to do anything! Just pray – whether you believe in God or not. You don’t have to believe in God to pray “God, if you exist, please reveal yourself to me and give me that authentic encounter with you

Experience God for yourself

Don’t settle for anything that anyone else tells you about God or about religion – experience God for yourself. Pray – then watch what God can do. Often, it’s only when we come to the very end of ourselves that we are able to allow God to do what He alone can do. In that sense, this is a good place to be. God alone can gradually heal the unhealthy emotions that have been conditioned in you by years of cruel put-downs.

Stop trying to explain yourself to your abusive partner or family member. Begin to put into place those ‘tough love’ strategies to try prevent the abuse from being effective. But know that what you need most of all is that miracle – that life-transforming encounter with God – that emotionally intimacy with Jesus. Before that can happen, however, you will have to overcome the biggest obstacle to your recovery.
